The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
