When Sunbathers Fled Attack, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, heard cracking sounds echoing around the suburb.
“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled something was wrong.
Positioned on the road, talking to a couple who had hurried up the hill soaked, she noticed someone coming up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He’s running into something that certainly every instinct would signal you to go in the opposite direction.
“Just no hesitation, but just totally full throttle racing.”
An Iconic Image of Heroism During Chaos
The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of courage in the following of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and medical teams caring for many victims.
Collective Reaction and Support
Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the location of the violence becoming a impromptu medical station. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including going into the water to rescue people needing help.
After the tragedy, statements of gratitude circulated widely. One post shared gratitude for the responders who showed that “compassion will always overcome evil”.
The squad of beach patrol published a message, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.
“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and support. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those impacted.”
Council Commendation
Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the violence commenced through to late that evening.
“There have been so many moving narratives, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a mayor.
“The team demonstrate altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be commended.
“As we grieve and process the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such evil.”
